Teachers Notebook: Let the Music Play On

Teachers Notebook: Let the Music Play On

Alison shares a playlist she's created for a playful and energizing practice.

I love to use music when I teach. Most of the time, I rely on the YogaFit music CDs, which are perfectly matched to the YogaFit class structure. But every now and then, I like to offer something that’s a bit more “rockin’” in energy and tempo. Not long ago, I taught a class in which I began the Mountain 1 series with my favorite Steven Tyler song, “I Make My Own Sunshine,” and all my students smiled. We moved on to Flying Birds (using peace signs as mudras) accompanied by MC Yogi’s “Peace Sign.” By the time we completed the series with “Mas Que Nada” by Sergio Mendes, the atmosphere had shifted and everyone felt more relaxed and more grounded. We, of course, finished with a long, healing savasana to Snatam Kaur’s “By Thy Grace,” which reminds us there is plenty of goodness in the world and we can be healed by a power greater than ourselves.

Here’s my latest playlist for a playful, energizing practice:
