My Obsession of the Month: Essential Oils

My Obsession of the Month: Essential Oils

by Beth Shaw | 10/01/2015

For my YogaLean Lifestyle, I use essential oils as a natural aid for weight loss and maintenance on a daily basis. They will change your life. My house is of full of them as they have a very positive impact on weight loss efforts when combined with healthy diet, yoga, and meditation. I use them daily in my water, on my skin, and in the bath.

Essential oils can help with weight loss by helping to make your water more alkaline, which can help the body carry less toxins. Some essential oils can suppress cravings, increase metabolism, reduce fluid retention and help alleviate emotional stress and stress eating. Personally, I'm a big fan of DOTERRA Oils.

Want to know how - specifically - to use essential oils in your everyday life? Read on.

1. How can essential oils help with health and wellness, in a general sense?

Utilizing essential oils at home can be uplifting, helping to raise your mood and relieve anxiety. Uplifting oil blends, like rosemary or eucalyptus, encourage good overall circulation. I’m not making this up! Studies have proven that the smell of rosemary has very positive effects.

2. Are there any particular oils that are helpful for mental health and wellness, and why?

Nose oils are particularly good. Nose oils are usually a combination of essential oils and medicinal or aromatic oils. They work by placing one to five drops of the oil in the nostril and lightly inhaling both to coat the inside of the nostrils and the sinuses and to gently stimulate the limbic system of the brain. There are a number of different types of formulas of oils. Some have eucalyptus and are more stimulating; others may contain more soothing and calming herbs and scents. Smell has such a powerful effect on us because the nose is like a superhighway to the brain.

Like I said above, rosemary, geranium, and lavender are particularly useful for mental health. And chamomile, clary sage, and ylang ylang can help you overcome anxiety and insomnia.

3. How about physical ailments like skin problems?

To get beautiful skin, then you should look into using lemongrass oil. It will make your skin glow! It has regenerative and detoxifying qualities, and is often used in India to help minimize bacterial growth on the skin.

Another great one is Monoi Oil, which is like a long-lasting moisturizer. It can purify and sooth rough skin, while also protecting it from harsh elements, like the early afternoon sun.

4. What are your tips for effective and safe use of essential oils?

Make sure you dilute your essential oils before using it on your skin. Combine essential oils with waxes, alcohols, or other diluting measures. If you put it right on your skin undiluted, then you may end up having a reaction.

And make sure you never ingest essential oils!

5. Are there people who should not use essential oils?

If you are pregnant, then you might want to avoid certain oils. For example, a pregnant woman should avoid rosemary, cedarwood, clary sage, clove, ginger, and other highly effective essential oils.
