April Student of the Month: Gary Sullivan
#YogaFitFamily, Meet Gary Sullivan - if you haven't already, his smile grins ear to ear. You can hear that smile in our YogaFit Podcast interview earlier this month with Gary.
Gary began his Yoga journey with his first Class on a Sunday in June 2011 at the age of 59. At the time Gary said he was "20 pounds overweight, [yoga] killed me." The instructor was YogaFit trained and teaching a vinyasa flow; that day Gary knew he was hooked and wanted to begin teaching. By September 2011, he was at Level 1 training with Shaye Molendyke. Gary began teaching at studios and the YMCA in 2012 and completed 200-hour RYT along with the 100-hour YogaFit for Warriors certification in 2014.
Earlier this year Gary launched a yoga program at the YMCA of Central Virginia to support the recovery process for Veterans with PTSD and trauma injuries, in partnership with the Veterans Affairs Administration. He is working with 21 men and 10 women as an outreach of the YMCA. The program includes Yoga Healthcare assessments (learned in Healthcare 1 & Healthcare 2) with a trauma-sensitive Yoga practice, learned through the YogaFit for Warriors program. Each Veteran participates for 12 months, the program is free to qualified veterans. Gary shares with us during his podcast that his father was a WWII airborne ranger and Purple Heart recipient. Because of this, Gary wants to share his yoga practice with those who have served. [ Read more about Gary's program with the VA at the YMCA here ]
This year Gary plans to complete the YogaFit 500-hour RYT and reach the level of 200-hour eRYT.
