Master Trainer Christa Norgren will be leading YogaFit for Athletes and YogaFit for Injury Prevention and Recovery for the first time at this years Toronto Mind Body Fitness Conference so we thought this would be the perfect time to ask her a few fun questions to get to know her better and learn about how she discovered YogaFit and how the YogaFit for Athletes program came to be.
What's your favourite yoga pose and why?
I have a few favourite yoga poses because it's too hard to pick just one; Upward Dog is one of my base favourite poses. It enriches my whole body from head to toe. I can literally feel my whole body preparing for class in this pose; my legs feel strong, my chest is open and my back feels alive! My other favourite poses are crow/side crow or elephant, even flying pigeon... any of the arm balances. They require strength, focus and coordination and they give me a yoga high!
If you could have any super power which one would it be?
Tricky question, I don't have one. It seems there is always a downside to having a super power and wishing for a super power always brings me back to what I have and can do right now. What I hold, is everyone, including myself, as powerful in every moment to make a difference!
What are your morning must-haves?
I have evening must-haves more than morning ones. I like a cup of tea and time to flake out before bed. My cat, Missy will let me know it is time for bed by waiting at the stairs.
Do you have a hidden talent that only your close friends/family know of?
hmmmm, I have the qualifications to teach basic canoeing and rock climbing
How did you discover YogaFit?
I discovered YogaFit in February 2005. I was invited to take the training through the YMCA and immediately began teaching classes on a volunteer basis.
What influenced your decision to become a YogaFit Master Trainer?
As a student in my YogaFit Level 1 I was enjoying the learning. I felt this is where I needed to be and I felt grateful. While learning and observing the trainer I said to myself; "This is what I want to do!"
How was the YogaFit for Athletes program developed?
I work at the Richmond Olympic Oval in Richmond BC, the speed skating venue during the 2010 Winter Olympic games. The facility currently hosts many sporting events and trains high performance athletes of all sports, including speed skating, volleyball, hockey, basketball and is the official training site for the Canada women's soccer team. I envisioned athletes having a way to improve performance, reduce injury and speed recovery should an injury occur. I sought to understand more and pursued training to understand the athletes world. I trained with "Athletes Performance", now EXOS in Sept 2011. From there, with my knowledge and experience with yoga, I put the two together.
What has been the impact of your yoga teacher training in your life and in the lives of those you teach?
Through my yoga training it is revealed to me time and time again that everything is perfect the way it is. No more "nobody or nothing is perfect" - the cliche so many of us grow up hearing and eventually believing. I believe that everything and everyone IS perfect just the way it is. Through joy and sorrow there is meaning and when I look at circumstances as perfect as they are, the learning happens quicker! "This too shall pass", another popular quote or cliche, keeps me patient when times are tough and turbulent. It also keeps me humble when things are smooth and joyful. I trust because everything is transient. Yoga has taught me that as I educate myself and educate others, no matter the hiccups along the way, who is in the room or not in the room, the timing is perfect!
What is your favourite YogaFit memory?
I remember just before I was an official trainer with YogaFit I was with Beth Shaw, YF Founder and Lisa Greenbaum, Director of YF Canada. We were at Vancouver's Canfitpro Conference. Before the presenters cocktail evening out, Beth and Lisa said there was something they had to tell me. It sounded serious...
"We would like to welcome you aboard as a trainer with YogaFit!"
I was surprised. I was expecting to hear from the education department after the conference. Beth and Lisa assured me that as the Founder of YF and the Director of YF Canada, I can consider myself as part of the YogaFit Team! I was delighted... actually ecstatic!
What advice would you give to someone who is just starting their yoga journey?
You are perfect the way you are, the timing of this moment is perfect and you are in charge!
