The Title of Your Biography?
Mary: “Bringing My Soul To This World” (lyrics from one of Dave’s songs. “Soul” by Davidson Yeager on i-tunes, spotify, etc.). Totally me! And so far is my all time fave song by Dave.
Dave: Resurrect Your Heart
What brought you to your mat?
Mary: I’d just become a Reiki master and I wanted to connect with Spirit/God and heal even more. Reiki and yoga are very connected for me.
Dave: Alcohol, addiction and depression. All gone now. 20 years December 2017.
How did you discover YogaFit?
Mary: The nice clothes at CanFitPro and the energy of it. I also saw the offices on the Danny and was always drawn to it.
Dave: I noticed the booth at CanFitPro in Toronto a couple of times and thought it looked interesting. And then Mary found out more about it and took her Level 1, 2 and 3. Then she suggested I go for Level 1, so I said “what the heck!”
How did you meet one another?
Mary: In 1998 I was doing readings in a metaphysical bookstore’s tearoom on Queen St. East in Toronto’s beaches. It was called Wunjo’s (which is the Rune of joy). A good friend introduced us. My first impression was to run away from Dave! Then we’d always see each other around while doing the Queen St. shuffle. Dave always said he wanted to come in for a reading, but he never showed up! He finally did 8 years later after we bumped into each other in a health food store next door from where I lived at the time. During the first reiki treatment, I had a vivid premonition of our life together.
Dave: We met at a metaphysical bookstore called Wunjo’s on Queen St. East in the beaches neighborhood of Toronto in the late 90’s. We even attended the same yoga class back then, but at different times. We were just acquaintances and knew some people in common. It suddenly burst into a romantic bloom on New Year’s Eve day 2005 when we bumped into each other at a health food store. It was also a New Moon.
How long have you been practicing and training together?
Mary: 2 years together. But I started my YogaFit teacher trainings 3 years ago.
Dave: I’ve always had a bit of a yoga practice since that class in the mid nineties. But very simple. YogaFit definitely brought my practice to new heights. Mary was already in the fitness field with her own classes so she jumped into teaching right away. I attend all her classes and also taught a few of my own classes in the fall of 2017. 2 years training together.
What made you decide to choose YogaFit as part of your yoga journey?
Mary: Reading the Chakra Bible opened my eyes to how beneficial yoga is when it comes to healing the chakras. YogaFit was the best system I could find to get my 200 hours and learn the most at my own pace. Plus, I’d already been drawn to the school for several years — so I knew this was my path.
Dave: I love YogaFit! The way it is presented made sense for me. I’d toyed with the idea of doing yoga trainings in the past with other yoga schools but it seemed either too “exotic” or “all-or-nothing.” Not to mention many poses are beyond me and I didn’t see much about modifications. We also met Beth Shaw at CanFitPro and she was unbelievably cool and her class was magical.
What is your favourite YogaFit memory so far?
Mary: When we did the Shiva dance in level 5! The song “Jump” by Madonna came on. And we were doing jump squats while chanting and feeling no pain. Total Blast! This was also the same song that gave me messages to be with Dave 12 years ago.
Dave: My favourite YogaFit memory…hmmm…so many to choose from! But probably after I got Level 1 (it was springtime). I immediately crammed in Level 2, Level 3 plus Mindfulness and Meditation during the summer at YogaFit studios on the Danny in Toronto. It was hot. It was summer. And I had nothing much on my plate during that brief time. I also got to know some of the participants who were there the whole month. And Mary would come pick me up at the end of the day. Fun times!
Why was (Level 5: Unification) your favourite YogaFit training?
Mary: The same answer as the previous question. Also connecting with some awes-OM-e people. It was truly magical. Plus, Dave and I were together so it was an experience we can always share.
Dave: Maybe because we were together for it and also we were relaxed. It was the weekend, so for us it was an experience. The energy of the group was magical, and the instructor (Paul Galloro) brings a certain “je ne sais quoi” that facilitates a “next level” training.
What has been the impact of your yoga teacher training in your life and in the lives of those you teach?
Mary: It gave me more confidence in myself. It also made me more aware of other great qualities I have. It’s always been a dream of mine to teach yoga, and YogaFit helped me accomplish that! A lot of students have told me that I gave them something that changed their lives. Because of YogaFit, I was able to show them they COULD do yoga. Many had been intimidated by yoga previously. They also loved my words of wisdom during the practice.
Dave: Well, I’m not a very active YogaFit teacher. At least right now. But it has had a huge impact. First of all, I’ve met some really cool people who I still correspond with. I’ve even worked on small projects with people that I would not have known were it not for YogaFit. I also feel much more confident with my own yoga practice as far as improving while staying injury free. When I was assisting with Mary’s classes my favourite part was after class. Some people would have questions about poses, etc. And I would enjoy discussing various modifications and approaches with them.
When you look forward, what does your yoga journey look like?
Mary: I will be doing yoga into my nineties. Or even longer! The yoga journey is happening every Now moment for me.
Dave: Well music is — and always has been — my thing. At the time of my training, I was going through a rebirth of sorts. I was questioning what I wanted to do with my music professionally at that time. I was in a bit of a limbo waiting for the answers to come to me. YogaFit trainings helped me through that process of transformation. And now I’m in a completely different place in relationship to my music. I think the trainings were like a stone dropping into a clear pond…the ripples will continue to be felt in every aspect of my life in every now moment.
What is one of your favourite, go-to cues you use to teach your students?
Mary: “Allow our breath to guide us into the pose. No need to lose our life force.”
Dave: “Reaching up, we let go of judgement, competition and expectation.” Absolutely!
