Transformation - Its an Inside Job:

 

As the year moves on and twists and turns arise that perhaps we never expected, it becomes even more important to stay on our path.  Our yoga practice then becomes our ballast, our anchor and the very grounding force for our spirits. While it is true we live in turbulent times, I believe we can utilize the tools at our disposal to stay centered;  Yoga, Fitness and  YogaFit.

 

I recently had the opportunity to contribute to a Huffington Post article on "My job is killing me " the article focuses on the effects of job stress on our health and well-being. Ironically even those of us in the healing, yoga and fitness industries can be affected by job stress. Long hours sitting anywhere, dealing with cranky clients, high maintained staff, handling the multitude of fires on a daily basis can adversely effect us no matter what business we are in. The importance of being a student becomes more paramount.  As does taking breaks in the day to engage in our passion of yoga and fitness- a run in morning or a yoga class as "happy hour"

YogaFit to Debut New Clothing Line

YogaFit is very excited to announce that Lisa Greenbaum, YogaFit Master Trainer and Director of YogaFit Canada, has been asked to design the new clothing line for YogaFit, due to be released next month!

ITO EN and YogaFit Team Up

"A day does not go by that I do not have my green tea," Beth Shaw said, during a recent trip to ITO EN offices in Brooklyn, NY. Beth says ITO EN tea is her go-to green tea, including the company's Sencha Shot and its Teas' Tea line. Beth knows the benefits of green tea - powerful antioxidants, it's energy boosting qualities and increased sense of well-being.

YogaFit Trainer Kristy Manual is Partner Program Manager

YogaFit is pleased to announce that Senior Master Trainer Kristy Manual has been named the new Partner Program manager.Kristy

 

Kristy says she is looking forward to working with YogaFit partners to help grow their business with the help of the powerful marketing presence of the YogaFit name and logo. Kristy hopes to expand the program and offer more support to partners and their businesses. 

 

Kristy, an E-RYT 500, has been a trainer with YogaFit since 2007 and leads many trainings each year. She has been very involved in the development and teaching of YogaFit's Therapy Programs as well as developing new workshops. She came to YogaFit after a twenty-year fitness career. She has a master's degree in Health & Fitness Management and holds ACSM Health Fitness Specialist certification as well as ACE personal trainer certification.

 

She has been involved in both training and management roles in the fitness industry and has always enjoyed helping people find health and wellness.Kristy believes she has truly found her passion in yoga and being able to reach so many people with YogaFit's transformational program is a blessing!

Meet the YogaFit Network

Host of the Month: Cindy Lafond

cindyCindy Lafond is the Branch Director for the YMCA of Downtown Manchester, in New Hampshire. She is married and is the mother of four children, three dogs, and a cat. She is an RYT-200 through YogaFit.

 

Cindy has been with the Y for over 17 years in a variety of wellness positions and has climbed the ladder to her current position in October 2011.  She came to the Y to teach all forms of group fitness including step, aerobics, kickboxing, and muscle conditioning classes, and "I have loved every 5,984 days I have been there."  Her love for inspiring, encouraging, and engaging with her members to promote spirit, mind and body, is what also drew her to YogaFit.

 

"I began my life long journey with Yoga Fit in 2003 when one day I read an ad in a magazine for hosting trainings. I was looking to find a way to bring Yoga to the Y, and YogaFit seemed to be the best fit," Cindy said. "From my first class to now, I have found my love for yoga grows stronger with each training experience." Cindy became a RYT-200 in 2007, and is currently working on her 500 hours.

 

"YogaFit has become a family activity as my children have been taking the trainings as well. I watch how my family has spread yoga to children of all ages, teens who are struggling with life, cardiac patients, cancer survivors, handicap children and adults, and seniors who thought they would not be as active as they were in their younger days," Cindy said.

 

Since she began hosting trainings at the Y, she says she has "met many new people, strengthened many friendships, opened many hearts, and learned to breathe for the moment."

 

"Yoga has helped me to live each moment with passion, enlightenment and spiritual awareness, and I hope to spread these gifts to all I come in contact with!" 

  

Trainer of the Month: Sandi Call

Sandi Call has been a trainer with YogaFit since 2000 and took her first YogaFit training in 1998 with Beth Shaw in the old YogaFit Studio in Hermosa. She has been in fitness since 1985 and ACE certified since 1986. Her love for the industry hasbrought many opportunities. She has been a fitness manager for several health clubs. She has her own business providing wellness programs for companies in the Salt Lake area. She provides services like health fairs, ergonomic reviews, fitness center management, group fitness classes and personal training. Sandi has taught group fitness for all of the 20 plus years she has been in the business. She teaches step, aerobics, group strength training, cycle, pilates and of course YogaFit.
"I believe in the system that YogaFit teaches us. It has allowed me to teach in many venues that lets yoga reach people that really need the benefits of yoga. I love sharing our message with all the fabulous professionals who come to us to learn the tools of safely sharing yoga," she said. She has been in nearly every state in the union teaching the YogaFit style. "I have learned more in my association with YogaFit and in my travels and meeting all the wonderful people who come to trainings than I could ever teach anyone."

 

 

Trainee of the Month: Holly Archer

Holly Archer has been a student of yoga since 2004. She started taking classes at her local gym with a YogaFit-trained instructor and immediately fell in love. 

 

"I felt like yoga was the perfect outlet for me when my hectic life as a mom left me stressed and overwhelmed. It helped me to relax physically and mentally, and I felt the difference it made in my life immediately," Holly says.

 

She decided to start teaching yoga two years ago, and started on her YogaFit journey. "I think the program is wonderful for people with super busy lives because the trainings are broken up into weekends and you don't have to take a big chunk of time out all at once," she says. "I love that it is designed to be taught to everyone, and that safe alignment is emphasized. The YogaFit manuals are very user friendly and they have all been invaluable to me as resources for my classes." Holly has been through Levels 1-3,  plus Anatomy & Alignment. She recently did her Level 1 re-train, and plans to take the Seniors and the Kids trainings in May and continuing to work toward her 200 hours.

 

"Every YogaFit trainer that I have met has been extremely knowledgeable and has brought their own strengths to the trainings," Holly says.

 

"I am so grateful to YogaFit because it has allowed me to share my passion for yoga, and it gave me the tools and the confidence I needed to start teaching. Thank you for allowing me to continue to grow not only as a teacher, but as a person, as well."

Beth featured on NY1

Just in time for Valentine's Day, NY1 reporter Kafi Drexel took to the mat with YogaFit Founder Beth Shaw to find out the benefits of yoga on heart health.

 

"Yoga is good for our hearts because we practice cardiovascular fitness when we are moving and breathing, letting the blood flow throughout our bodies, keeping our heart rates up, and also to improve our circulation especially when it is cold outside," Beth says. 

 

The minute-and-a-half spot aired on NY1 several times on Feb. 13. NY1 is a 24-hour cable-news television station focusing on the five boroughs of New York City. And with YogaFit as the official yoga program of New York Sports Club, the largest fitness chain in NYC, it made perfect sense for Beth to take to the NY1 airwaves.

 

New York Sports Club instructor Kristin Gambell e-mailed Beth after watching the spot on NY1. She says the YogaFit program is hugely popular among NYSC members. "My students LOVE Yogafit, and my numbers show it (50-60 people on a Tuesday night!)," writes Gambell, who says one of her goals is to finish her RYT-200 with YogaFit. "I think that overall, it is the perfect format especially in a gym environment - it is safe, user friendly, and clients love it."

YogaFit and YogaButt get a mention in the New York Times

nytimesA new book "The Science of Yoga," by William J. Broad is stirring up lots of conversation over both the benefits and the dangers of yoga. And a review in the New York Times of the controversial book mentions YogaFit and Beth Shaw's YogaButt program as among the exciting new advances in modern yoga practice.

 

"Nor is yoga at the end of its evolution," the review says. "Broad details the recent growth of the 'yoga industrial complex,' the big business of selling books, magazines, DVDs, clothes and the mats that seem to inhabit every tote bag carried in brownstone Brooklyn and on the Upper West Side. And he brings us up to date on current trends in yoga practice, documenting the popularity of routines that combine yoga poses with vigorous aerobic exercise. These very un-serene styles include Ashtanga yoga, Bikram yoga and YogaFit, whose 'YogaButt' program promises a bottom that is 'sleek and sexy.'"

 

True, the yoga market is wide and potentially very lucrative, but we here at YogaFit also believe in business with a greater purpose. "It is our mission to create transformation of the whole person - physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually," says Beth.

YogaFit Featured in March 2012 Issue of Triathlete

Beth Shaw's 'Top Yoga Poses for Cyclists' will be in this month's issue of Triathlete magazine. Triathlete magazine focuses on multi-sport athletic events, particularly swimming, bicycling and running, and it is intended for both the beginning athlete and for those participating at a competitive level.

 

Beth's poses for cyclists include cobra, upside down pidgeon, and a basic forward fold.

Beth Shaw Quoted Among Top Women Leaders in the Fitness Industry
The American Council on Exercise featured Beth Shaw among six women leaders in fitness in an article in response to ESPN columnist Leslie Goldman, who claimed women play a lesser role in the fitness industry.

The article says: "In fact, some might argue that women essentially created the fitness industry as we know it today. Yet, don't tell that to ESPN columnist Leslie Goldman who, in writing about her experience at the Club Industry Show 2011, described women as 'eye candy.'"

Beth countered that women play a strong and vital role in the fitness industry, but that men continue to lead in terms of business.

"Women are well represented in terms of teaching classes and being coordinators and group fitness directors, but at shows for buyers and suppliers, there might be one woman to 100 men. That tells me that even though women are the ones moving the industry forward, men are still the decision-makers. As a result, fitness has become a female industry led by men, which can be frustrating at times because I'd like to have more say in what's going on."

When it comes to the yoga fitness industry, Beth says male entrepreneurs have found it difficult to mimic the success YogaFit has had.

"I think being a woman has helped me, especially since 95 percent of the clients who come to YogaFit are women. There are many men who have tried to start other yoga ventures, but they haven't succeeded in the way that we have."

 

Beth was quoted along side Kathie Davis, executive director of IDEA Health and Fitness Association; Janet Frenkel, chief operating officer of American Council on Exercise; and Judi Sheppard Missett, founder and CEO of Jazzercise, among others.
