Dear YogaFit Enthusiasts:


Spring in in the air.  A time a fresh starts, new blossoms and regeneration.   This is the time of year to shed unwanted pounds, clutter and mental patterns (behaviors) that may not serve us. Through our YogaFit practice we can enjoy physical and mental renewal in the form of Spring Cleaning. 

I have just returned from the Toronto Yoga Show  & YogaFit Canada where we are busy preparing for YogaFit's first Canadian Mind Body Fitness Conference. Toronto is an amazing city and I hope many of you can join us at this exciting event. Next week I head East for YogaFit's Pittsburgh MBF, where I will be teaching Master Classes daily open to the public and our network to raise funds for local animal rescue charities. I feel truly blessed that I have the opportunity to teach yoga all over the globe. 

Spring is an excellent time to recommit to your practice and add some new tools to your teaching.  We are excited to be moving forward with the YogaFit Therapy program and welcome Dr Stephanie Short and Neuroscience to the program. Look for YogaFit for the Brain and some very exciting new specialty programs for the 500 Hour RYT Track.

Lets remember that  "youth does not die - it just gets tired and goes to sleep"  May our practice keep us awake, involved, excited and forever young at heart and body.

Usually we hold YogaFit in the News for later, but this one is too good not to share with everyone up front. In the April issue of Entrepreneur you will find YogaFit and its commitment to community service featured, including the story of California defense attorneys Toni Carbone and Christine Galves yoga program for prisoners that stemmed from YogaFit's community service requirements.  

As the article says, "When YogaFit founder Beth Shaw instituted the community service requirement in 1997, she didn't know it would inspire dozens of ongoing service-based yoga programs around the country. ... Its graduates are working with prisoners, battered women, homeless populations and people in impoverished nation, largely inspired by their certification requirement."

 

A big part of yoga is Karma, giving back. And we at YogaFit are proud of what we can accomplish in our communities when we put our OM to it.

YogaFit Therapy: New! Yoga for your Brain

Neuroscientist Dr. Stephanie Shorter has joined the YogaFit team and will be a trainer in the 300-hour Yoga Therapy program later this year. A long time yoga practitioner herself, she is passionate about promoting yoga as a foundation for wellness, personal transformation and profound social change. To ensure that she knows the YogaFit curriculum inside and out, she started taking trainings with us last October and will become a registered yoga teacher through YogaFit. 

 

Stephanie recently gave a talk at our Dallas MBF in March entitled Yoga Research: Applications for Your Teaching. She summarized the major themes that have emerged in the last decade of yoga research, including studies that show how asana and pranayama (yogic breathing techniques) can increase fitness at the cellular level through reducing inflammation and acidity while also boosting the natural production of antioxidants that protect from oxidative cell damage. She has a knack for relating these research studies in a conversational way that makes the results more accessible and practical in our daily lives, both as practitioners and as yoga teachers - it's all about putting research into practice. The one-hour presentation turned into a two-hour discussion as many enthusiastic trainees stayed around to chat and ask questions well into the evening. 

 

Look for Stephanie at an upcoming MBF conference (you'll definitely see her at the Palm Springs MBF in July) or maybe even on the mat beside you at your next training!

Join Adi and Stephanie at this sacred and natural Northwest ashram for a week that will transform your teaching, your practice, and your life. Over the course of this week, we'll put the busyness of life on hold and dive deep into our truest nature and highest potential...a retreat in living Yoga. This is a retreat and a training for yoga teachers. Attendees must have a foundational yoga teacher training completed (RYT 200 or equivalent training) as we will be delving deep into the true heart of yoga. Personally, you will be invited to know your self and all that you really are from the perspective of Yoga. As a teacher, you will have the opportunity to advance your teaching in a way that you may have never expected...you will learn to recognize your teaching strengths and to authentically and comfortably create connection, unity...Yoga... in your classes. 

 

This is a gorgeous old schoolhouse that has been converted into an ashram, a sanctuary for practicing yoga and living in retreat. Participants will be making their own meals and cleaning up after themselves as part of the ashram community they create. There are beautiful dorm style rooms, shared baths, & a shared kitchen. Host of the Month: Carrie Kuzontkoski

Carrie Kuzontkoski is the Fitness Coordinator at Kennesaw State University's Student Recreation and Wellness Center in Kennesaw, Georgia.  She holds a Masters Degree in Kinesiology from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and certifications from AFAA and ACSM.

For many students, campus recreation is the first opportunity they have to experience mind/body benefits of Yoga.  Carrie hopes to provide rich development opportunities to the students at KSU by hosting trainings like YogaFit. Personally, she hopes to achieve her long time goal of becoming a RYT-200 with YogaFit! 

  

 

Trainer of the Month: Tracy Jennings-Hill

Tracy ventured into her yoga practice over 8 years ago as she was retiring from the US Air Force after serving over 20 years. While on active duty, an injury caused the physical challenge of sciatica to arise, so as a way to help maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle she began dabbling in different disciplines of yoga, discovering the YogaFit style, finding her home. As she grew to understand the value of the mind/body connection, she decided to pursue her dream of becoming a fitness professional, embodying all aspects of the profession, instead of using her BS in Human Resource Management.

Subsequently, she attended her first YogaFit Level 1 training in 2001. Since then she completed her 200 E RYT, and her RYT 500 in 2010. She has been group fitness instructor for over 14 years, where she now focuses on indoor cycling, dance, and preprogrammed muscle strength and endurance training. She also is an ACE Certified Personal Trainer and has managed group fitness programs at several fitness facilities throughout the United States. Tracy became a trainer in March 2007; attaining Senior Trainer status and is now the International Hosting and Tradeshow Manager.  

 

 

Trainee of the Month: Julie Burnett

Julie Burnett's YogaFit journey began at the TSI Summit in 20TK where she first had the chance to take a workshop with Beth. She had been teaching yoga but felt a connection to YogaFit. "I loved Beth's style, her company's mission of bringing yoga to the fitness industry, and since I taught in a gym, Boston Sports Club, it was meant for me!"

"Before that class with Beth was over, I knew without any hesitation I was going to beome a 200-RYT through YogaFit. The trainings were all so interesting, and informative to me. I was like a sponge absorbing all the knowledge from all of my instructors and other trainees." Julie is currently working toward her 500-RYT and she says she still gets excited when she goes to teacher trainings.

"YogaFit has enriched me emotionally, physically, and impacted my everyday life," she said. "My classes are deeper, smoother." Julie says YogaFit has increased her confidence as an instructor and has allowed her to make her classes safe and effective for all levels. Julie also feels prepared to teach outside of the gym environment after taking specialty trainings including Seniors and Yoga Therapy. She also find the spirtuality of yoga enriching and says Level 5 was her favorite training.

"To me, there is no better feeling then when a participant tells me they feel so much better, calmer, happier, healthier after a yoga class. It is the best job in the world!" 

 

New Partner: PJ McCaughn, A Women's Worth Studio

Please welcome new partner PJ McCaughn. PJ recently opened A Woman's Worth Fitness studio in Hilton Head Island, SC a popular resort area. A Woman's Worth Studio offers fitness and yoga classes in an intimate setting for beginners thru advanced students, including senior yoga & fitness. Class sizes are limited to 12 to allow for more personal attention.  AWWS also offers Mindful Eating meetings and other educational and social activities. The studio is located in The Energy Center building, a group of integrative holistic wellness practitioners.  If you are in the area  please stop by! Beth Films for HGTV at the 24 Hour Fitness in West Hollywood

YogaFit enthusiasts joined Beth on March 27 at the 24 Hour Fitness in West Hollywood for an exclusive taping with HGTV. The segment will appear in the upcoming television seriesSelling LA premiering on the network. Participants were asked to donate a blanket or towel to Operation Blankets of Love, an organization which provides needed supplies, such as blankets, to animal shelters.

 

The class was a huge success. Manny Ruiz, the District Group X Manager for 24 Hour Fitness, wrote Beth to thank her. "I look forward to getting my 'YogaButt' kicked again soon."

Beth featured in Huffington Post

Office stress is a common affliction and Beth Shaw was asked to provide some insight into managing it in a recent Huffington Post article, "8 Ways To Prevent Your Office From Killing You."

 

"When work has you in a frenzy, it's best to mentally check out for a few minutes and get some peace and quiet. Beth Shaw, yoga guru and founder of Yoga Fit Training Systems, recommends completing some simple breathing exercises and meditation to stabilize your heart rate and refocus," the article says.

 

As YogaFit enthusiasts, we are familiar with three-part breathing and meditation and its ability to melt away the tension, but for many the techniques remain a mystery.

 

Beth recommended this:

 

- Three-part breathing: Sitting down, inhale one full breath into the belly, chest and throat, then fully exhale. Repeat 10 to 20 times. 

- Stress Reduction breathing: Inhale through the nose, then exhale deeply through the mouth with a sigh, sound or a scream. Shaw says that while this is a great way to encourage laughter and joy (great stress relievers), you may scare your coworkers. "This is best done as a fun group activity," she says. 

- Meditation: Uncross legs and sit up tall, engaging core muscles. Close your eyes and take 10 deep breaths into your belly. Pull shoulders back and down, chest out. Allow any thoughts that come to mind to float away, picturing a blank screen.

Beth in Massage Magazine

Massage therapists and body workers are susceptible to injury and strain due to the repetitive and physical nature of their work. Not to mention the emotional stress that comes from working in the health and wellness field. So Beth reached out, with a story in Massagemag.com explaining the positive benefits of yoga for body workers.

 

"Physically, massage therapists suffer from tight trapezius muscles and low-back issues from too much forward flexion. They often have overuse issues in their shoulder and deltoids. Yoga provides an ideal way for massage therapists to balance their bodies from the work they do for long hours at a time," Beth writes.

 

"Emotionally and energetically, massage therapists take on a lot of their clients' energy. Yoga helps clear the energy and let things go. Emotionally, the body believes what the mind believes. Affirmations about peace, calm and tranquility, along with positive imagery, are conveyed to the nervous system. Yoga brings greater relationships with others, life and us. As we begin to explore these relationships more, we see which interactions genuinely support us in moving toward calmness."
